Plastic or cosmetic surgery actually
covers a variety of procedures which alter the body's outward
appearance. Procedures are used to shape certain body
parts
such as the breast or nose, soften skin tone to reduce or eliminate
wrinkles, and to correct problems resulting from accident or
disease.
The term plastic surgery comes from
the Greek word "plastikos" which means "to
mold". Plastic surgery procedures as we know it today were
carried out in 100 BC, and were primarily attempts to restore
normal
form to body parts that had been altered due to injury or war.
Plastic surgical procedures can be divided into two major
categories: cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery.
Reconstructive surgery involves the
restoration of function or form to body parts that have been damaged
as a result of injury, disease, or congenital defects. Reconstructive plastic surgery requires technical as well as
artistic skills.
What's New
Dr. Tucker and Dr. Howell are excited to now offer fractionated CO2 laser resurfacing with Lumenis UltraPulse Active, Deep, and Total FX technology for their patients. Traditional CO2 laser resurfacing has proven itself to be one of the most effective treatments for skin tightening and general improvement of skin appearance. Newer, fractionated technology delivers the CO2 laser energy in a manner that allows for reduced downtime for the patient and dramatic results. ActiveFX is designed to treat fine lines, texture, and pigmentary changes (e.g. dyschromia), while DeepFX treats deep wrinkles and scars. TotalFX is the combination of these two modalities, customized for each patient to optimize their result. Treatment is performed in our office, typically with both a topical anesthetic cream and oral medication to make the procedure a more comfortable experience. Dr. Tucker, Dr. Howell and their staff offer Thermage to their patients. Thermage is a
non-invasive radiofrequency procedure that has been shown to tighten
skin and thus create a lift without surgery. The procedure
creates heat within the deeper layers of the skin while cooling the
superficial layers to ensure patient comfort. Thermage takes
between 1 and 2 hours depending upon the area treated and may be
scheduled for only one session. However, if the patient likes
the results and would like further enhancement, Thermage may be
repeated in about 6 months. The results are visible in about
one month and last up to several years. For more information call
Salem Plastic Surgery or visit the Thermage website at www.Thermage.com.
